Filtration media Adsorbent
Activated Alumina Ceramic Ball is activated alumina: porous aluminium oxide formed into balls, with a large internal surface that captures fluoride and arsenic from water.
Made of: Activated alumina (porous aluminium oxide)
Form: Balls
Main job: Adsorbs fluoride; also arsenic(V)
Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight
Fluoride and arsenate ions in the water attach to the alumina surface and stay there. This works best in slightly acidic water and weakens as the pH rises.
Reduces fluoride: the US EPA names activated alumina as a best technology for fluoride; WQA gives its best range as pH 5.5–6.5
Reduces arsenic(V): EPA lists activated alumina, including point-of-use units, for arsenic; arsenic(III) needs oxidising to arsenic(V) first
Other EPA listings: activated alumina is also listed for selenium and uranium in public water systems, which often adjust the pH first
Does not reduce aluminium: it can release small traces of aluminium into the water
Evidence: well established EPA regulations and WQA guidance document activated alumina for fluoride and arsenic. That evidence covers the material type, often in pH-adjusted treatment plants; we have no independent test of this product, and at the pH of most tap water it holds less.
Activated alumina needs slow, long contact and works best before anything raises the pH, so it belongs early in the cartridge.
Layer position: Early to middle, before calcite, alkaline or mineral balls and any polyphosphate layer
Pairs well with: Activated carbon for chlorine and taste; calcite or mineral balls placed after it
Keep in mind: Give it several layers and a slow flow; expect a shorter life on alkaline water

Before first use: Pour gently to keep dust down, then rinse until the water runs clear
Storage: Keep sealed and dry; activated alumina absorbs moisture from the air
Replacement: A cartridge layer cannot be regenerated; replace it when tests show fluoride or arsenic rising again
Yes. Activated alumina works best between pH 5.5 and 6.5. In more alkaline water it holds less fluoride, so use more layers and test the filtered water more often.
Yes, but put those layers after the activated alumina. If the pH is raised first, the alumina takes up less fluoride.
No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.
How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.
Porous activated alumina (aluminium oxide) balls for fluoride and arsenic(V) reduction. The US EPA lists activated alumina for both. It works best at pH 5.5–6.5 and holds less as the pH rises, so it belongs early in the cartridge, before any layer that raises pH.
