Filtration media Adsorbent
Bamboo Activated Carbon (4–8 mesh) is activated carbon made from bamboo, in coarse granules.
Made of: Activated carbon made from bamboo
Form: Coarse granules, 4–8 mesh (4.75–2.36 mm)
Main job: Reduces free chlorine with little resistance to flow
Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight
Coarse grains let water through easily but react more slowly than fine grains, so they need more depth for the same result.
Reduces free chlorine: activated carbon does this within seconds of contact (University of Georgia Extension)
Slower per layer: the Water Quality Association gives 8–30 mesh carbon half the reaction rate of 12–40 mesh, and 4–8 mesh is coarser still
Organic chemicals: not claimed; we have no test data for this grade
Evidence: well established Chlorine reduction by activated carbon, and the effect of grain size on speed, are documented by university extension services and the Water Quality Association. We have no datasheet or test data for this bamboo grade itself, so we credit it for chlorine only.
Its coarse grains suit the inlet end of the stack, where they take the first chlorine load without slowing the flow.
Layer position: Inlet end, after any KDF layer and ahead of finer carbon
Pairs well with: A finer carbon later in the stack, such as Jacobi AquaSorb CS
Keep in mind: Weak as the only carbon in a short cartridge; do not put fine 30–60 mesh carbon directly next to it, or the fine grains can wash into the gaps

Before first use: Rinse with clean cold water until it runs clear; new carbon sheds black fines and can raise the pH of the water for a while after installation
Storage: Keep sealed and dry, away from odours, solvents and strong chemicals; wet carbon draws oxygen from the air, so store it in a well-ventilated place
Replacement: Replace it with the cartridge on its planned schedule; a used-up carbon layer works less well and can release chemicals it collected
When a free flow matters more than contact time, or as a first chlorine layer ahead of finer carbon. In a short cartridge, finer carbon does more per layer.
Only slowly, like any ordinary carbon, and coarse grains are the slowest. For chloramine, use a catalytic carbon such as Jacobi AquaSorb CX-MCA.
No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.
How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.
Bamboo Activated Carbon (4–8 mesh) is coarse activated carbon made from bamboo. Its large grains let water through easily and reduce free chlorine, but they react more slowly than fine grains, so it suits a first chlorine layer ahead of finer carbon. We credit it for chlorine only.
