Filtration media Adsorbent
Bamboo Activated Carbon (8–30 mesh) is activated carbon made from bamboo, in medium-coarse granules.
Made of: Activated carbon made from bamboo
Form: Granules, 8–30 mesh (2.36–0.60 mm)
Main job: Reduces free chlorine and its taste and smell
Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight
Like all activated carbon, it turns free chlorine into chloride as water passes through, which reduces the chlorine taste and smell. Its porous surface can also hold some dissolved organic chemicals, but we have no test data for this grade, so we do not claim that.
Reduces free chlorine: activated carbon does this within seconds, in the first few inches of a new carbon bed (University of Georgia Extension)
Grain size: the Water Quality Association gives 8–30 mesh carbon about half the reaction rate of 12–40 mesh carbon of the same kind; the larger grains also let water through more easily
Organic chemicals: not claimed; in one peer-reviewed study, a lab-made bamboo carbon adsorbed less chloroform than lab-made carbons from coconut shell, oak and cedar
Evidence: well established Chlorine reduction by activated carbon is well documented by university extension services and the Water Quality Association. We have no datasheet or test data for this bamboo grade itself, so we credit it for chlorine only.
It works as a chlorine layer in the carbon section of the cartridge.
Layer position: After any KDF layer; before ion-exchange resins, calcite and the outlet pad
Pairs well with: Jacobi AquaSorb CS or CX-MCA when you also need chemical or chloramine reduction
Keep in mind: It is not a substitute for coconut-shell carbon for chemicals such as THMs; it does not remove bacteria, nitrate, fluoride, hardness or most metals

Before first use: Pour gently to keep dust down, then rinse with clean cold water until it runs clear; new carbon sheds black fines and can raise the pH of the water for a while after installation
Storage: Keep sealed and dry, away from odours, solvents and strong chemicals; wet carbon draws oxygen from the air, so store it in a well-ventilated place
Replacement: Replace it with the cartridge on its planned schedule; a used-up carbon layer works less well and can release chemicals it collected
Both are activated carbon and both reduce chlorine. Coconut-shell grades such as Jacobi AquaSorb CS come with a manufacturer datasheet that describes them as suited to chemicals such as chloroform; we do not yet have that data for this bamboo grade.
Only slowly, like any ordinary carbon. For chloramine, use a catalytic carbon such as Jacobi AquaSorb CX-MCA.
No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.
How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.
