Filtration media Redox
NMC IV (20x) is a nano-metal-cluster (NMC) redox medium: very small metal clusters formed on porous ceramic grains.
Made of: Metal clusters on a porous ceramic carrier; the metals are not disclosed
Form: Porous ceramic grains, 0.5–1.5 mm (maker)
Main job: Sold for free-chlorine and dissolved-metal reduction (supplier claim, not independently tested)
Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight
The supplier and the maker state that the metal clusters work by redox, like copper–zinc media: free chlorine is turned into chloride, and some dissolved metals are turned into solid metal on the surface.
Free chlorine: the supplier states it removes residual chlorine
Dissolved heavy metals: the supplier lists lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium; no test data were supplied
Not claimed: the supplier also lists disinfection by-products, organic chemicals such as pesticides, ammonia, arsenic and control of microbes; we found no evidence for these and do not claim them
Evidence: limited The only sources are the supplier's and maker's own statements, with no published test results behind them. We have not found independent tests of NMC media.
Place it like copper–zinc media: near the inlet and ahead of carbon, so the layers after it catch anything it releases.
Layer position: Near the inlet, ahead of carbon; never the last layer before the outlet
Pairs well with: Activated carbon after it; the supplier states it is safe to mix with other filter media
Keep in mind: Supplier conditions are a flow under 6 L/min and a bed deeper than 4 cm; no pH or temperature range is published
Material | Metal clusters on porous ceramic (metals not disclosed) |
|---|---|
Form | Porous ceramic grains |
Size | 0.5–1.5 mm |
Colour | Brown and black |
Rated flow rate | < 6 L/min |
Minimum media quantity | > 40 g, in a bed > 4 cm deep |
Spec source | Supplier product sheet; maker's NMC product page |
Rated values are the supplier's optimal handling conditions; performance varies with flow rate, input level and the amount of media used.
Before first use: Rinse until the water runs clear, then run a new cartridge to drain for a few minutes
Storage: Keep sealed and dry, away from chemicals; avoid breathing the dust
Replacement: No service life is stated for cartridge use; replace it with the cartridge, or sooner if chlorine taste returns
It is the supplier's claim that this grade is 20 times as effective as KDF media. We have not seen the tests behind it, so treat it as a grade label rather than a measured result.
Both are the same kind of nano-metal-cluster medium. The supplier rates NMC IV as the stronger grade and calls for less of it: more than 40 g instead of more than 200 g, still in a bed deeper than 4 cm.
The supplier states it is safe to mix with other filter media. We still suggest keeping a carbon layer after it.
No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.
How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.
The higher grade of the nano-metal-cluster redox media, on porous ceramic grains. The supplier states it reduces free chlorine and dissolved heavy metals with less media than NMC-III; we have not found independent tests of these claims.
