Filtration media Mineral / pH

Volcanic Stone Mineral Ball is a porous ball made from natural volcanic rock, used as a coarse, open layer in a filter bed.

  • Made of: Natural volcanic rock (supplier); the main constituents of volcanic rock are silicon, iron and aluminium oxides

  • Form: Balls

  • Main job: Forms a porous, open layer and releases small amounts of minerals

  • Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight

What it does

Volcanic rock is light, rough and full of pores. In a filter it forms an open layer that spreads the water, and its surface slowly gives off small amounts of the rock's minerals.

  • Porous layer: volcanic scoria has been tested as filter packing, mainly for wastewater

  • Releases minerals: the supplier states it gives off silicon, calcium, magnesium, sodium and other major and trace elements, without amounts

  • Not for contaminant removal: a lab study found volcanic rock takes up very little fluoride at pH 6 (under 15 mg per kg of rock), and we found no data behind the supplier's claims for chlorine, chromium or arsenic

Evidence: limited Volcanic rock has been studied as a filter packing material, mainly for wastewater, but we found no independent data on how much mineral it adds to drinking water. It is also marketed for 'negative-ion' and 'active' water; independent evidence for these effects is limited.

Where it goes in your filter

It is best used as a coarse layer near the inlet, where it spreads the flow before the finer filter media.

  • Layer position: Near the inlet, before the finer filter layers

  • Pairs well with: KDF-55 and activated carbon placed after it

  • Keep in mind: Porous stone can grow a biofilm when water sits, so keep it at the inlet end, not the outlet; it removes no contaminants

Handling & care

  • Before first use: Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear; porous rock sheds fine dust

  • Storage: Keep sealed and dry; it is silicate rock, so keep dust down when pouring

  • Replacement: The supplier gives no service life; replace it with the cartridge

Common questions

Does it remove chlorine or heavy metals?

We do not claim it does. We found no data behind the supplier's chlorine and heavy-metal claims, and a lab study found volcanic rock takes up very little fluoride at pH 6. Use carbon, KDF or other contaminant-removal layers for that job.

Why does it go at the inlet?

It is coarse and open, so it helps spread the water across the cartridge. Near the outlet, its pores could hold bacteria in water that sits overnight.

Is this medium certified?

No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.

How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.
