Filtration media Mineral / pH

MPH Alkaline Ceramic Balls are fired ceramic balls of the type makers sell as 'MPH', typically made from maifan stone powder and pearl (calcium carbonate) powder.

  • Made of: Alkaline mineral ceramic; makers of this type use maifan stone and pearl powders (our supplier's recipe is not disclosed)

  • Form: Ceramic balls

  • Main job: Raises pH and adds calcium and magnesium to low-mineral water

  • Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight

What it does

In balls of this type, the calcium-rich pearl powder and other minerals dissolve slowly into the water. That neutralises acidity, raises the pH and adds hardness minerals; makers state the balls also release silica.

  • Raises pH: makers of MPH-type balls quote an output pH of 8–10, with a maximum of 10

  • Adds minerals: makers state calcium, magnesium and potassium, without amounts

  • Adds silica: makers quote about 60 mg/L of silicic acid

  • Can overshoot: pH above 8.5, the top of the US EPA's recommended (non-enforceable) range of 6.5–8.5, is likely with fresh media, RO water or water that sits in the cartridge

Evidence: manufacturer data These figures come from other makers' sheets for MPH-type balls, not from our supplier, and we found no independent test of this material. The balls are also marketed for 'alkaline' and low-ORP water; independent evidence for health benefits of alkaline water is limited.

Where it goes in your filter

It sits near the outlet, after the contaminant-removal layers, because a higher pH weakens fluoride and arsenic media, and added silica weakens arsenic media further.

  • Layer position: Near the outlet, after activated alumina, iron-based media, carbon and resin, and before the filtration pad

  • Pairs well with: Activated carbon and the other contaminant-removal layers placed before it; use it instead of Alkaline Ball or Calcite, not alongside them

  • Keep in mind: Strongest on soft, acidic or RO water; on hard water it adds little and can add to scale; it removes no contaminants

Handling & care

  • Before first use: Rinse until the water runs clear, then send the first flush to drain; new balls shed fines and give their highest pH

  • Storage: Keep sealed and dry, away from chemicals

  • Replacement: The supplier gives no service life; replace when a pH test shows the outlet water no higher than the incoming water

Common questions

What does MPH stand for?

It is a trade name used by makers of this ball type. We have not found an agreed meaning, so we do not expand it.

How is it different from Alkaline Ball?

Both raise pH and add calcium. MPH-type balls are usually made with maifan stone and pearl powder. Our supplier has not published the exact recipe of either, so we cannot yet say more about how they differ.

Can I mix it with other media?

Yes, as its own layer near the outlet. Keep it after activated alumina and iron-based arsenic media, which lose capacity at higher pH and with silica, and use only one pH-raising medium per cartridge.

Is this medium certified?

No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.

How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.

Summary

MPH Alkaline Ceramic Balls are fired alkaline mineral balls for the outlet end of a layered cartridge. Balls of this type are typically made from maifan stone and pearl (calcium carbonate) powders. In soft, acidic or RO water they raise pH and add calcium, magnesium and silica. The effect is strongest when new and fades with use. They are not a contaminant-removal medium.
