Filtration media Wellness-marketed

Tourmaline Ceramic Balls are fired ceramic balls that contain powdered tourmaline, a natural boron-silicate mineral, usually blended with other minerals and clay.

  • Made of: Tourmaline powder with other minerals and clay (typical recipes); our supplier's recipe is not disclosed

  • Form: Ceramic balls

  • Main job: Marketed for 'negative-ion' and far-infrared water

  • Used in: Waslix custom layered cartridges; also sold loose by weight

What it does

Tourmaline is a natural crystal mineral. Its marketing rests on 'negative-ion' and far-infrared claims, which are not measures of water quality.

  • May nudge pH: in a lab study, loose tourmaline particles at 5 g/L moved test solutions toward about pH 8, with wide differences between samples; we found no such test for fired balls in a cartridge

  • Negative ions and far infrared: these are the main marketing claims; we found no independent evidence that they change drinking water

  • No contaminant removal claimed: lab reports of metal uptake are batch tests on loose tourmaline and do not apply to ceramic balls in a cartridge

Evidence: limited The only independent data we found is lab work on loose tourmaline mineral, not on ceramic balls. Independent evidence for the negative-ion and far-infrared claims is limited.

Where it goes in your filter

If you want it, add it as a single finishing layer near the outlet, after the contaminant-removal layers.

  • Layer position: Near the outlet, after activated alumina and iron-based media, and before the filtration pad

  • Pairs well with: Activated carbon and the other contaminant-removal layers placed before it

  • Keep in mind: Any pH effect adds to other pH-raising layers; it is an optional layer and removes no contaminants

Handling & care

  • Before first use: Rinse until the water runs clear and send the first flush to drain

  • Storage: Keep sealed and dry; it is silicate mineral, so keep dust down when pouring

  • Replacement: The supplier gives no service life; replace it with the cartridge

Common questions

Does it add negative ions to water?

That is how it is marketed. We found no independent evidence that tourmaline balls change drinking water this way, so we make no such claim.

Does it remove contaminants?

No. Choose the contaminant-removal layers in your cartridge for that. This is an optional layer.

Is this medium certified?

No certification is claimed for this product. Filter media can be certified for material safety (for example to NSF/ANSI 61) and complete systems for performance (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53), but we have not found such a listing for this material.

How well any medium works depends on your water, the flow rate, contact time and the other layers in the cartridge. This page describes the loose medium, not a certified filter system.

Summary

Tourmaline Ceramic Balls are fired ceramic balls that contain powdered tourmaline, a natural boron-silicate mineral, usually blended with other minerals and clay. They are marketed for 'negative-ion' and far-infrared water; independent evidence for those effects is limited. Lab work on loose tourmaline mineral shows it can nudge pH toward about 8. They are an optional layer and do not remove contaminants.
